Books

Why is it so hard for me to find a good book?

Some may judge my choice of novels, it tends to be fantasy based. I know that to fend off a fae you need iron and vampires rarely care too deeply about the sun, and the protagonist probably has a destiny that is known to many but themselves. I get that they have commonalities that vary from authorship liberties to common folklore. But I read the books primarily because even despite many tropes, at least the story is overall new to me. The common human (or sentient being) qualities and experiences are there, but at least the path through them has a bit more variety.

So as I began to sort through fictions and other genres trying to branch out from fantasy I immediately snapped back like a too tight elastic to what I prefer after reading the same book summary umpteen times with adjectives rearranged and a switch up of nouns. Here are a few of the most common book prompts.

Fiction by women for women:
After a tragic event, Protagonist picks up the pieces of her life
Following a tragic occurrence, Protagonist picks up the shambles of his life
Protagonist moves to a small town in the aftermath of a tragic event
After losing their sibling/spouse/child/parent, Protagonist works to glue back the broken bits of their life.
Every review: "Read this heartbreaking tale, with poignant uplifting moments, we journey through these words together, plus there was at least one funny line so I can say it was funny in the hopes that it will outweigh the overall depressing plot."

Memoir
Self absorbed cunt waffle cunts around until becoming a more bearable human with fewer self absorbed qualities by making friends. (Actual summary of the book Wild)

Fiction by men for men:
Esteemed treasure hunter Greg goes on a new adventure following his divorce at the bequest of 18 year old student
A treasure hunter, named Robert, searches for himself and treasure in Bolivia after his wife suddenly leaves him. He gets more than he bargained for when 15 year old Maria shows up which is definitely two years older than the age of consent there.
Average Joe, a helicopter pilot, was just hanging out one day when a treasure map fell into his copter. The timing couldn't have been better for this recent divorcee in need of a pick me up. The treasure map belongs to breasted breasty Candice.

Fiction by married men:
Carl has it all, a wife, two kids, and a dog who he loves more than all of them combined. Let's cry.
Narrated by dog, dog observes his owner, best friend, and companion Eric as Eric gets married and has kids and the dog gets neglected. Let's cry.
Ted and his dog have been inseparable. Let's cry.

Romance by women:
Julie, a struggling Brooklyn baker is about to throw in the tea towel until mysterious billionaire Alejandro asks for the secret to her buttered buns.
Julia, a renowned baker has it all except a social life. That all changes when millionaire Estephan strolls into her Manhattan bakery.
The bakery shop is Juliette's passion, as is feeding Mike the homeless man who sleeps on her stoop. But is there more to Mike? He definitely looks like a former pro-athlete pretending to be homeless. Is he rich and just faking homeless to see if Juliette is really a genuine person?

Romance by men:
Ghost sex

After asking for non-tragic Fiction suggestions my friend suggested a book which I read the prompt for and after the typical breathtakingly poignant but upliftingly heartbreaking dreary tale description of the small town woman surviving I went back to my fantasy.
Sure the lead character has a tail and hooks up with a human, and sure there are consistent themes, but I'd rather stick to my books with epileptic gay pirates dating a rich short aristocrat while searching for a magical heart sunk in the bottom of a hidden land over a sad bitch at her job.
